"There are two types of education....One should teach us how to make a living, and the other how to live." John Adams 2nd President of United States 1797-1801.
John Adams once said, "I do not say when I became a politician, for that I was never." Yet he was a member of the Federalist Party rivals to the Democratic-Republican Party of his time. The two parties were born during George Washington's administrations, but it was during John Adams administration that the parties reached full flower. John Adams was an intellectual and graduated from Harvard with an MA in 1758. However, he was temperamentally unsuited for balancing competing political forces. The threat of war with France brought him into conflict with Alexander Hamilton who supported war against France. In order to remain neutral Adams encouraged the passing of the Alien and Sedition acts in 1798. Granting Adams broad new powers to arrest virtually anyone who criticized his policies. So much for present day politicians complaining about Presidential Executive Orders!
